Brokenwood Hunter Valley Semillon 2009
Varietal:
Semillon
Region:
Hunter Valley
Semillon is the traditional, premium white grape of New South Wales’ Hunter Valley. This
extremely versatile grape variety is typically harvested at a low baume in the Hunter, highlighting
its fresh citrus and green apple notes and vibrant acidity. It can be enjoyed young in this style,
or with substantial bottle maturation, showing attractive creamed honey and toasty notes when
aged for 10 to 20 years.
All fruit was hand-harvested with extreme care from Brokenwood’s estate vineyards. The
fruit was then crushed, chilled and pressed immediately in order to preserve the fresh fruit
flavours and avoid phenolics. Juice was fermented with neutral yeasts in stainless steel only,
with malolactic fermentation prevented in order to retain the crisp acidity.
Excellent, luminous green/yellow colour. Lifted zesty, lemongrass aromas with some sweet
apple blossom characters. Fruit dominant on the palate but typical tight structure with citrus
acid finish. Initial lime plus cut grass flavours. Perfect balance of fruit, alcohol and acid.
An impressive Semillon from a year that will reward early drinking or cellaring.
